About Yogmata

Born in Yamanashi, Japan, in 1945, Yogmata Keiko Aikawa has devoted herself to the practice of yoga, meditation, and disciplines of health since her adolescence. In time, she rose to become a respected instructor of yoga, conducting classes at numerous cultural centers throughout Japan and guiding thousands of students in the practice of asana yoga.

At the age of thirty-eight, Yogmata’s life took a decisive turn when she encountered Pilot Babaji, an eminent master of yoga and meditation, who had journeyed to Japan for a television program. Recognizing in her a rare depth of dedication, he invited her to undertake training in the Himalayas. Yogmata thereupon travelled to the Himalayas, where she underwent authentic and rigorous yogic discipline upon the path to enlightenment, ultimately attaining Samadhi — the supreme and most exalted state of yoga and meditation.

Since 1991, in her devotion to the cause of world peace, Yogmata has performed Public Samadhi — long regarded as the most incontrovertible testament to enlightenment — on eighteen occasions across India, earning profound admiration and reverence throughout the nation.

Today, she travels throughout the world, sharing the practice of meditation and a way of life grounded in essential truth. In Japan, she also leads retreats dedicated to the realization of enlightenment, guiding the evolution of human consciousness.

Yogmata is likewise celebrated as an author, with her published works having sold in excess of 1,000,000 copies in total.

History of Yogmata Keiko Aikawa

10’s
Encountering Yoga

Yogmata was a child with an inquisitive mind, and began exploring various health regimens and natural foods when she was just sixteen.

20’s
Spreading Aikawa Yoga in Japan

In 1972 she developed a comprehensive yoga, “Aikawa Yoga”, and founded the Aikawa Keiko Holistic Yoga and Health Association. For over forty years she has held and supervised yoga classes at more than fifty culture centres across Japan, and also created “PraNadi Yoga” and “Yoga Dance”. She studied in India, Tibet and China to deepen her own training, travelling every year — in particular to India — to practise authentic yoga at various ashrams.

30’s
Encountering the Himalayan Great Saint

While still visiting India, Yogmata also pursued her study and research into various therapies and healing practices in America. Then, in November 1984, a television station invited Pilot Babaji to take part in a programme and asked Yogmata to support it. It was a life-changing encounter.

40’s
Achievement of Samadhi, the Supreme Enlightenment

In 1984, Yogmata visited the Himalayas at Pilot Babaji’s invitation. This led her to her master Hari Babaji, the legendary Himalayan Great Saint. After undergoing years of austere spiritual training, she attained the supreme state of Samadhi — regarded as the equivalent of liberation and Nirvana within the Buddhist tradition.

After 50’s
Activities for World Peace

Since 1992 she has journeyed across the globe, imparting the wisdom of meditation and a life aligned with one’s true nature. In Japan she conducts residential retreats devoted to the attainment of enlightenment, inspiring the awakening and evolution of human consciousness.
